What is Juneteenth? This holiday marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. June 19th is now recognized as the day legal slavery ended, and on June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.

Juneteenth has been observed in Fort Wayne since the early 1990's, formerly recognized by the Pontiac Street Festival. This event featured black business ownership and community fellowship. Be sure to stop by the Pontiac Street Mural by local artist Lyndy Bazille to commemorate Juneteenth's history in Fort Wayne (located on the side of Sweets by Main by Coney Island).
