In conjunction with the Department of Physics Friday Night at the Observatory Series, hear Thomas talk about an ancient scientific instrument that was discovered off the coast of Antikythera, a Greek island located in the Aegean Sea. Only recently has the mechanism been studied in detail to reveal its incredible workings. More than 2000 years old, the geared mechanism could show and predict the motion of the Sun and Moon among the stars, including lunar phases and eclipses. This talk highlights the extraordinary knowledge of the universe possessed by ancient Greek astronomers and how they incorporated that knowledge into the mechanism.

After the lecture, take a trip to the incredible Purdue Fort Wayne Observatory! The Purdue Fort Wayne Observatory is on West Baker Drive, east of the FW Philharmonic box office. It’s an 8-minute drive from the lecture at Kettler Hall.
2101 East Coliseum Blvd Fort Wayne, IN America/Indiana/Winamac
