In the early 1990s, TobyMac, Michael Tait, and Kevin Max organized the popular Christian contemporary group dc talk. Together, the trio produced music with a diverse mixture of hip-hop, rock and funk. Over the next several years they sold more than eight million albums, toured extensively and won GRAMMY Awards for their music.
In 2000, dc talk disbanded and TobyMac formed his own band under his name, while continuing to tour and record music. In 2001, TobyMac released his solo debut (Momentum) followed by Welcome to Diverse City (2004). Both releases received GRAMMY nominations and were awarded RIAA Gold Certification.
On several occasions TobyMac has been to Fort Wayne for Winterjam performances of which he was a part. I had the privilege of interviewing him by phone for newspaper articles for these events. My teens had listened to dc talk and so I knew his music. TobyMac on stage was a high-energy package of singing and dancing. As nearly-manic as he was on stage, I expected him to be the same way on the phone, maybe talking in a loud voice and unable to focus on the interview. Duh on me.
At one point during the conversation he shared that he was the father of five children and he cared deeply about the effect his separation from his family might have on them.
“It breaks my heart when I’m on road four and five days each week when we’re touring,” he said. “I’m sharing music and God’s love, but it kills me to be away from my kids.”
Since that time, I’ve admired TobyMac not only as a talented singer but also as a caring father. I can't wait to attend his latest tour called "Unplugged Stories & Songs."
