It was a sad day for Fort Wayne residents when a fire last winter forced the temporary closing of Hainan House Restaurant in Quimby Village on the city’s south side. Of course, it was not known for certain that the cozy restaurant that serves the best Tomato Beef soup this side of the Mississippi would re-open. Thankfully, after three months of remodeling, Hainan House did re-open a few weeks ago. That was only one part of the great news at the re-opening. Another part is that it is now open seven days a week. Even better, they now serve that fantastic Tomato Beef soup daily! Before the fire, I planned visits for days when the soup was served, which were only Wednesdays and Fridays. After a recent visit, I’m happy to say not much has changed to the décor of Hainan House. There are still convenient handicapped parking spots in front, along with spots for quick pick-ups of orders. Colorful parasols dot the ceiling and filmy curtains hang in the windows that face Bluffton Road. Otherwise, the same atmosphere prevails with daily specials, red booths, fish tank and friendly servers. Despite a menu featuring dozens of specialties, I ordered a favorite from the past -- Sweet and Sour pork. My friend ordered Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. Both meals which completely covered our plates came with a hot tea, steamed rice, a bowl of soup, fortune cookie and almond cookie. My dish cost $7.50; the shrimp dish was the same. You know I ordered the beef soup, right? So did my friend. We loved it! If you haven't visited Hainan House lately, stop in and enjoy a hot, economical, nutritious meal. Foster Park is just around the corner. After dining, enjoy the tulips in bloom at nearby Foster Park.
