Gypsy has been a popular story since 1962 when Jane Russell and Natalie Wood starred in the Hollywood film version.
The plot centers on Gypsy Rose Lee who leaves a successful career as a stripper to raise two daughters. The problems develop when said daughters do not want to follow Mama’s advice. One daughter shows promise of stage presence but wants to avoid show business to find true love. The other daughter, seemingly unsuited for the bright lights, ultimately embraces it. The musical has immortal tunes including "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Let Me Entertain You," and "Together Wherever We Go". Despite the decades that have occurred since Gypsy first became a recognized type of character in American theater and the fact that Mama’s child-rearing may not be too wholesome, this play is still a favorite product of Broadway. Mama Rose promises to live on as the Civic’s experienced musical director Phillip H. Colglazier gives it new life.
