The treacherous weather this summer in Fort Wayne hasn't stopped local farmers from doing all they can to bring their freshest, tastiest foods to local farmer's markets. Forget the rain. Forget the cold. They're still bringing their A-game.

"I'm always excited about us working with people and having them see fresh vegetables that were grown locally," said Gonzalee Martin, founder of GATE (Growth in Agriculture through Education). "That's the key to this whole process, giving people fresh, locally grown vegetables, and that's exciting."

Martin is the market manager of the McCormick Farmer's Market, located on the corner of Edsall Avenue and McCormick Avenue. The food sold at McCormick comes from neighboring Slataper Street Farms, an urban farm where community members like Burmese refugees and teens from the Boys and Girls Club have spent months preparing and growing it.

The McCormick Farmer's Market is sponsored by the HEAL (Healthy Eating Active Living) initiative from Parkview Health and the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation. Not only does the market sell gorgeous produce every Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM, but there is also cooking demonstrations with free samples and recipes. It's certainly a family-friendly atmosphere focused on healthy eating.

Two other Farmer's Markets will also be running through September on Wednesdays. The New Haven Farmers Market is from 4-7, and the Solomon Farm Park Farmers Market is also from 4-7.

But the biggest day of the week for fresh produce, meats, eggs and other farm and agricultural products is Saturday, and one visitors can't miss is the YLNI (Young Leaders of Northeast Indiana) Barr Street Market. For more than a decade it has offered fresh and unique local produce, as well as plants, baked goods and homemade crafts. Visitors can expect live music, children's activities and more each Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM.

Another bustling market on Saturdays in Fort Wayne is the South Side Farmers Market. This historic market has almost 100 stands and is a favorite in Allen County because of its tradition. Master gardeners are on site to answer questions, and vendors are happy to share selection methods, storage tips and favorite recipes. This market runs from 7 AM to 1 PM.

Whether you fancy healthy foods from a local community garden, a big-city market feel like Barr Street, or a historic adventure at South Side Farmers Market, Fort Wayne has you covered. Check out any of the major farmer's markets this summer in Fort Wayne for an authentic market experience:
