In its heyday, the Emboyd(original name) was a seven-story building, with a 250-room Indiana Hotel wrapped around the north and west sides of the theatre. In 1952, the Emboyd Theatre and Indiana Hotel were sold to the Alliance Amusement Corporation, along with the Indiana Hotel adjacent to the theatre. The name changed to the Embassy Theatre.
Flashback to today. These areas have sat unused for more than 40 years. But it won't be that way for much longer. The Embassy is in the process of completing a project that includes the renovation of four floors of the former Indiana Hotel and other undeveloped areas of the building. The plan calls for a two-story-high ballroom and rooftop garden, studio and rehearsal space, classrooms, history center and improved public access and concessions areas.
According to Embassy staff, they've made significant progress. Construction was complete on the 4th floor and the Embassy staff moved into new offices on June 19. Construction is almost complete for the rehearsal space and educational classrooms on the 5th floor. Elevator work continues on both the west and east sides of the building. Excavation has begun in the alley between the Embassy and the Botanical Conservatory for the new alleyway bars. The Embassy is now taking reservations for the new areas currently undergoing renovation. In addition to the theater lobby and former Indiana Hotel lobby, the Embassy will now offer several other areas for rent. There is the new Ballroom at the Embassy with the rooftop garden, the Mezzanine Lounge at the Embassy, the Board Room at the Embassy and rehearsal space and classrooms that will be opening at various times over the next 12 months. The ballroom and rooftop garden, which will be rented as one space, will open in March 2016.
I have a feeling this place will be the venue for wedding receptions. If wedding bells are in the air, you're in luck.
