I always like to eat at a restaurant at least twice before writing a blog post about it; specifically, I try to eat somewhere for lunch and dinner to get a feel for the differences in the menu and in the atmosphere. Over the last month or so, I’ve had two fantastic meals at Chops Steaks and Seafood, located here in Fort Wayne on West Jefferson Boulevard. My wife had eaten at Chops before and was anxious for me to try it. Our first experience was at lunch. I was struck by the formal yet easy atmosphere of the place. I felt comfortable in jeans and a sweater but would have felt equally comfortable in a shirt and tie (it was the same at dinner). Chops has an open kitchen, so depending on where in the restaurant you’re seated, you get a glimpse of how the restaurant runs. Before seeing anything else on the menu, I knew I wanted to try Chops’ famous chop salad. Honestly, I don’t think I’d really ever had a chop salad before (not being much of a salad guy until recently), but this was one of the best salads I’ve ever had. As an entrée, I had the Grilled Chicken Ciabatta Sandwich. I’m a sucker for garlic mayo. Having had such a great lunch experience, we decided to have our Valentine’s Day dinner at Chops, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere between lunch and dinner didn’t change much, although at night the restaurant was significantly, romantically darker. I had to have another chop salad (seriously, I could eat one every day), and since it was a nice evening out, we split the crab cakes as an appetizer, which were great, and I had the 7-ounce filet mignon (rare, just how I like it) served over bacon cheddar mashed potatoes. It was the best steak I’ve had in years.
