  • Saarinen Designed, A.C. Wermuth Home Tour

    2017-10-06 2017-10-07 Saarinen Designed, A.C. Wermuth Home Tour <p>Completed in 1942, the Wermuth house is one of only seven private residences designed by the world renown architects. A.C. Wermuth served as the contractor for the Cranbrook Academy in Michigan and First Christian Church in Columbus, Indiana, arguably the two most famous designs completed by Eliel Saarinen. The home has never been open to the public before, making this truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the work of a master.  </p> <p> </p> <p>Tours are scheduled in three time slots, 10 am, noon and 2 pm. Transportation to the home will be provided by bus, leaving from the Concordia Theological Seminary parking lot thirty minutes before the tour begins. Tickets can be purchased online at archfw.org or by calling the ARCH office at (260) 426-5117. Limited space is available. </p> <p> </p> <p>Also part of the weekend of the tour, Brian Conway will be presenting a free public lecture on mid-century modern architecture and the Saarinen’s at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art on Friday, October 6<sup>th</sup> at 6:30 pm. Conway is the Michigan State Historic Preservation Officer and the co-author of the award-winning book <em>Michigan Modern: Design that Shaped America. </em>Conway has lectured across the country on topics related to modernism and historic preservation and his work on modernism won a national advocacy award in 2016 from Docomomo US. In addition to this lecture, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art exhibit on midcentury architect Louis Kahn will be open late for lecture attendees to view the exhibit.</p> <p> </p> <p>Both the lecture and the tour are part of ARCH’s 2017-2018 Community Education Program, sponsored in part by the Wilson Foundation, the Dr. Samuel D., Martha B. and Mabel I.
