So when I was asked the question of what I would do in Fort Wayne for one day, I immediately thought of a girl's day out, designed for leaving the kids at home (although there's plenty to do here with families too). My day would focus on the outdoors, shopping, the arts, and eating. These are the things that I have come to love about Fort Wayne and all the small city charm it has to offer.
A Girl’s Day OutI would begin the day by taking a bike ride on the Rivergreenway and exploring the rivers that make Fort Wayne the city of "three rivers." Taking the Rivergreenway through Foster Park, I would stop for a break at Foster Park’s flower gardens, which offer beautiful blooms throughout spring and summer. Afterwards, I would grab a coffee and breakfast at the Friendly Fox Restaurant. With fabulous food and a chic neighborhood feel, the Friendly Fox is a hidden gem in the Southwood Park neighborhood district.
After breakfast I would spend the day exploring downtown Fort Wayne, with a stop at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art or the main branch of the Allen County Public Library, which boasts a fantastic genealogical center. Lunch could be at any one of our fabulous downtown restaurants, but my favorites include The Dash-In and Central City Café.
During the afternoon, I would shop downtown at the women’s fashion store Urban Hippie, explore unique gifts at Creative Women of the World, shop for décor at House of Furniture and check out the architectural salvage store, The Wood Shack. A stop at Fortezza coffee would be a nice pick-me-up in the afternoon. For dinner, I would sit outside on the patio at Club Soda and order their smoked Gouda appetizer and a steak. A post-dinner show would complete the day perfectly, and top picks would include the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, The Fort Wayne Ballet, or one of our great local theatre options, including Broadway at the Embassy, First Presbyterian Theatre, Fort Wayne Civic or all for One productions.
Even after planning my own perfect day in the Fort, I realize that a day isn’t enough. Fort Wayne has plenty to offer and I’m lucky enough to get to live here and enjoy it anytime.
