One of Fort Wayne’s best kept secrets is tucked away in the heart of Covington Commons. Situated amongst other restaurants and offices in the strip lies the Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant, located at 6410 W. Jefferson Blvd.
Although not as expansive or as overwhelmingly decorated as Indian restaurants in larger cities, there is ample room for seating in the spacious dining room, which tastefully showcases Indian relics and paintings.
This restaurant is a great introduction to Indian culture and cuisine for folks experiencing it for the first time. All customers are informed of ingredients in each dish, which are written in the menus and on the buffet lines. Customers choose level of spiciness.
The dinner menu features mouth-watering dishes to appease all culinary desires, ranging from simple appetizers ($3 – $8) to meat and seafood selections to vegetarian cuisine ($9 – $13). I recommend bringing a friend or two to share in your new experience – and to share your large meals! Lunch prices are available for under $10.
During my first visit for dinner, I ordered mild Chicken Korma (chicken cooked with cashews, raisins and cream). It was a large and deliciously hot serving, accompanied by a bountiful bowl of basmati rice. Fresh appetizers included naan (bread), soups, and fried vegetables mixed with chicken and spices.
For my second visit, I ordered the lunch buffet and was as equally pleased. Some of my favorite dishes were Saag Paneer (spinach cooked in cheese and spices), Punjabi Bhaji (vegetable fritters in sauce), and Aloo Mattar (peas and potatoes cooked in sauce). A popular favorite is Chicken Curry, which became one of mine, too.
All buffet dishes are relatively mild, so ask for extra spices.
To enhance your Indian dining experience with dessert, choose Gulab Jamun – a sweet Indian delicacy made of milk essence and fried in honey syrup. Or, sample the mango pudding, mango ice cream, or Kheer – Indian rice pudding. There is also Kulfi, a rich-tasting ice cream made with milk from a water buffalo!
You’re bound to become thirsty. Indian Masala Tea (hot milk with Indian spices) or Mango Lassi (yogurt drink) will suffice. One is bound to discover a new favorite recipe before leaving the Taj Mahal!
Take home a menu for future reference or use it for take-out orders. You may prefer as I do to dine in and enjoy the atmosphere with friends!
