If you like eating breakfast anytime, add Rich’s Café to your list of places (located on Fort Wayne’s south side) that offer it in abundance. Rich’s had been recommended to me by my husband and many of his friends for the good food and service and decent (what I thought to be low!) prices.
I was not disappointed. The Italian omelette (ham, pepperoni, onion, tomato, Italian seasonings and mozzarella, $6.99) reminded me of my favorite pizza.
On another visit, the scrambled eggs were cooked well, but I must have misread the menu as three sausage patties arrived with my meal instead of two. I only ate two and, along with scrambled eggs, hash browns and bagel, was stuffed for the rest of the day.
The menu contains other worthy mentions – Chicken Skillet (Sliced grilled chicken breast layered with fried potatoes, green peppers, onions, mozzarella cheese, two eggs, $6.99); Club Wrap (Sliced turkey and ham, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, $5.79), Chocolate chip pancakes (2, $3.79); Biscuits and gravy ($3.99).
Friday morning is an especially busy time at the restaurant. A men’s group occupied a room in the back, while a dozen couples filled booths. The waitresses kept coffee cups filled and delivered hot food promptly.
This place reminds me of another diner where my dad used to take me when I was a child. It was mostly filled with farmers who seemed more inclined to talk about the weather than tear into their food as I wanted to do as a 10-year-old.
Dad never seemed in a hurry so we’d sit for a while, enjoying our food and time together. It was especially fun to eat breakfast for lunch. That was the rebel in me!
